Before adopting V-One, schools struggled to teach PCB design due to the absence of in-house tools for validating the functionality of students’ PCB designs. Without the ability to test their circuit, students’ knowledge remained purely theoretical. They purchased a <a href="https://www.voltera.io/v-one" id="">V-One PCB printer</a> for <a href="https://www.polymtl.ca/iontronics/en/people" target="_blank" id="">their lab</a> in 2020, and were one of the very first customers to purchase a <a href="https://www.voltera.io/nova" id="">NOVA material dispensing system</a> when it was released in 2022.&nbsp;</p><p id="">Their research focuses on polymer poly(3,4) ethylenedioxythiophene doped with polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS), a self-healing thin film polymer, and its applications in organic bioelectronics, flexible, and stretchable electronics, as well as organic and inorganic ion-gated transistors.</p><p id=""><em id="">“It goes without saying that it’s much easier to print our designs with NOVA, and the results are also precise. For Jiaxin Fan, a postdoctoral fellow focusing on wearable biosensors for medical and biological applications and printed electronics, two significant improvements with NOVA have been the ease of aligning patterns and traces, as well as the pressure sensor's ability to provide a steady flow and produce reliable print results.</p><p id="">“One thing that really stands out about NOVA is the multilayer printing capability and the integrated computer vision. With the camera, we can align the patterns much more easily compared to V-One. NOVA also enabled him to print less viscous materials, such as gallium-based liquid metal ink with an organic suspension.</p><p id=""><em id="">“Sometimes when I train someone who wants to use NOVA, it only takes a few minutes to teach them how to use it, because the steps are easy and there are on-screen instructions.”&nbsp;</em></p><p id=""><em id="">— Chi-hyeong Kim, a PhD student in Chemical Engineering at Polytechnique Montréal</em></p><p id="">Also helpful for the team is NOVA’s large print area (220 mm × 300 mm), which saves them time by eliminating the need to change and secure the substrate, and then regenerate the height map.&nbsp;</p><p id="">Since becoming a Voltera customer, Professor Cicoira has recommended Voltera printers to several colleagues due to their precision and ease of use. <h2 id="">Highlights</h2><p id="">For years, Gerd Grau, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and Director of the Electronics Additive Manufacturing Lab at York University used the <a href="https://www.voltera.io/v-one" id="">V-One PCB printer</a>. At the time, they were researching projects that had applications in areas from stretchable electronics to printing electronics directly onto carbon fiber composites.&nbsp;</p><p id="">While V-One was getting the job done, it required a lot of workarounds for use with flexible, stretchable, and conformable applications because the machine was designed to print traditional, rigid PCBs.&nbsp;</p><p id="">Use cases like the ones being researched at York University were at the forefront of our minds when we began developing NOVA. We knew the next generation of electronics would have form factors that hadn’t yet been discovered.&nbsp;</p><h2 id="">Leveling up with NOVA</h2><p id="">In October 2022, Voltera released the NOVA materials dispensing system. <h2 id="">Highlights</h2><p id="">The team at Living Architecture Systems Group is striving to bring the discipline of architecture to life. While challenges around the integration of electronics into structural systems are common, they find inspiration in the interconnectedness of nature, creating a novel approach that blends practical craftsmanship with technological innovation.&nbsp;</p><h2 id="">V-One: Becoming one with nature</h2><p id="">When Philip Beesley, Professor of Architecture at the University of Waterloo, and Director of Living Architecture Systems Group began conceptualizing this project, he found many parallels in nature.</p><blockquote id=""><em id="">“How on earth could we make something which is artificial into something which we could associate with the world of nature, in the world of life?”<br></em><strong id=""><em id=""><code id="">- Philip Beesley, Professor of Architecture at the University of Waterloo, and Director of Living Architecture Systems Group</code></em></strong></blockquote><p id="">He began to look at the project in the same manner that nature works in wetlands, or the way deep filaments of mycelium (mushrooms) intertwine as a root network underground. They have also worked with breadboards, as well as muriatic acid, garolite, and burning in traces.&nbsp;</p><p id="">Now, with V-One, they can quickly prototype, completing multiple design iterations in just one day. Gone are the days of outsourcing circuit board production, or resorting to makeshift solutions.&nbsp;</p><p id="">The team at Living Architecture Systems Group uses V-One to integrate sensors, electronics, physical architecture, artificial intelligence, chemistry, and psychological research into physical objects. <h2 id="">Highlights</h2><p id="">The vastness of space provides seemingly endless opportunities for exploration and innovation. It’s what is at the forefront of the mechanical and aerospace engineer program at Princeton University. Mechanical and aerospace engineering students are using <a href="https://www.voltera.io/v-one" id="">Voltera’s V-One PCB printer</a> to build CubeSats, miniature satellites that are designed for space research.&nbsp;</p><h2 id="">V-One: Enabling innovation</h2><p id="">When Mike Galvin, Sr. Technical Support, Mechanical Engineer, at Princeton started building out a design lab, he wanted to focus on enabling students to make every piece of the spacecraft in-house, on the grounds of Princeton University. It was important to him that they see their work through from build to launch during their undergrad tenure.&nbsp;</p><p id="">For student Shannen Prindle, hands-on experience with V-One meant a deeper understanding of the project. From conceptualization to launch, she was involved in every aspect of spacecraft’s development — including the rapid prototyping and fabrication of the project’s printed circuit boards. Using V-One meant that Shannen and her peers gained insightful knowledge on the electronic circuitry involved in such a complex project.</p><blockquote id=""><em id="">“If we didn't have something like the Voltera V-One (...) <h2 id="">Highlights</h2><p id="">The Bao Group is a team of chemical engineers, chemists, material scientists, physicists, and electrical engineers working towards the goal of developing flexible and stretchable materials, electronics, and energy devices.&nbsp;</p><p id="">Their groundbreaking research ranges from smart bandages and self-healing electronic skin to flameproofing lithium-ion batteries, and stretchable and implantable brain probes.&nbsp;</p><h2 id="">V-One and the invention of robot skin</h2><p id="">With a <a href="https://www.voltera.io/v-one" id="">V-One PCB printer</a> in their lab, researchers in the Bao Group are designing novel solutions to everyday problems. In particular, they are developing robotic skin (also called e-skin), which is in the category of flexible, stretchable, and <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.ade0086" target="_blank" id="">self-healing electronics</a>. It is capable of generating nerve-like impulses that mimic human skin and talk to the brain.</p><blockquote id=""><em id="">“Robotic skin should have a lot of sensors to mimic our skin's function, like pressure sensors, strain sensors, temperature sensors, and torsional sensors. Stretchable sensors will change the way we track biological signals and provide continuous and precise healthcare monitoring, even when a doctor is not present. This kind of research requires the ability to test materials, make changes to designs, and prototype unconventional form factors quickly and easily.
